Although it is an uncommon drainage issue, rats can find their way into your drainage and sewer system, making their way into and under your property.

Rats quite often try to find warmth throughout the winter, and there’s no better way in for them, than through your drainage system. These unwanted visitors can cause serious issues to the structural integrity of your drains and property. That’s why, our team at Flush Drainage take great pride in keeping these pests out of where they don’t belong. With our Rats and Rodents Drain Inspection service.

Is it my responsibility if there are Rats in my drains?

Now, there is no simple answer to this. It all comes down to how and where the rats have entered your drains. If the rats were to have entered from a cracked sewer pipe, which is located on a public road just outside of your property, then the responsibility is not yours. However, if they have entered your property or the drains are located within your boundaries, then you are unfortunately responsible.

How can I find out if I have rats in my drains and where they have come from?

To safely work out whether you have rats in your drains and where they have come from, requires the help of a drainage company. Here at Flush Drainage, we use HD CCTV drain surveying equipment to take crystal-clear images of your drains. From the footage we take, we can identify whether there are any signs of rats living in your pipes. The obvious signs we look out for include rats, droppings, and items used to nest. The less obvious signs that we examine include cracks and perforations to the pipes as well as investigating the drainage runs coming off your property. If the rats have entered your drains from your property, we will put you in contact with a trusted pest control company to remove the rats safely. However, if we can prove the rat infestation has been entering from a public area of your property, then it will be a case of contacting the local water authority to make them aware of the issue.

How to prevent Rats in my drains

There are several steps you can take to prevent rats and other rodents from entering your drains. A small hole or crack the size of a 5p coin can allow mice to enter and a 10p coin can allow rats to enter. So, the smallest signs of damage to your drainage system can be the root cause of your rat infestation. Here are a few solutions we would recommend to firstly get rid of any rats and secondly prevent them from returning.

  1. Complete a CCTV drain inspection to identify any signs of rats or rodents
  2. Have the drains cleaned and sanitised
  3. Install rodent prevention devices to your drainage inlets
  4. Repair any damaged drains
